So, you have decided to take on the challenge of completing your first triathlon, well done! Now you have to find the right equipment to make you comfortable during all three disciplines. This is where the tri suit comes in. But what is a tri suit? What is it for exactly? Follow the guide.

For swimming, pedalling and running in a single garment, a triathlon suit is essential. Advantages: it dries quickly after the swim and is comfortable for cycling thanks to the second skin fabric that you won't even notice during the run.

A triathlon suit is worn like a pair of cycling shorts, i.e. without underwear.

It is worn for the swim, for which the material is made. You keep it for the cycle, for which it is very comfortable thanks to its built-in pad and you can run with it. The tri suit is a high-tech outfit engineered to make the triathlete comfortable during the three disciplines. Thanks to its second skin effect, it is worn from beginning to end of the race.

It is available in a one-piece suit version with or without sleeves or as an outfit made up of a separate jersey and tight shorts also known as a singlet + shorty.

Tri suits are often confused with neoprene wetsuits, however, each one has a very specific function:

the neoprene wetsuit is only used for the swimming section. It is compulsory when the water temperature is less than or equal to 16°C, optional when it is between 16 and 24°C, and forbidden when the water temperature is greater than or equal to 24°C. In addition to protecting you from the cold, it makes you more buoyant in the water.

the tri suit is worn underneath the neoprene wetsuit and is worn throughout the race. the size is close-fitting and the fit is aerodynamic,

Although it is not necessary to wear underwear beneath the tri suit, women may wear a crop top or bra underneath if they need it.

Tri suits are made of a fabric that is very similar to swimwear fabric, which has several benefits: it dries quickly, is lightweight and stretch, giving you total freedom of movement during the three disciplines. It is also breathable and keeps you cool throughout the race.

Tri suits have a pad that is very comfortable when sitting on a bicycle and prevents rubbing. The pad is antibacterial, offering excellent standards of hygiene, and eliminates perspiration. It is however not as thick as a pair of cycling shorts. This is to ensure that it dries quickly when you get out of the water so that you can run comfortably.

The tri suit is equipped with silicone grippers at the thighs to hold the legs in place.

Practical details

The tri suit avoids you having to put on some tight shorts and a T-shirt in the transition zone as you get out of the water. You waste less energy and, once you have started, you no longer have to think about your equipment – you can make the most of the race!

Time saving during the transition

Even if you are not necessarily looking to achieve an excellent time for your first triathlon, you will appreciate the fact that you can quickly get on your bike as you get out of the water and then immediately start running afterwards.

Sun protection

One of the advantages of the tri suit is that it protects your skin from the sun. Indeed, during a race and particularly during the cycle and run, triathletes are exposed to a lot of sunshine, which is why it is advisable to wear a short-sleeved top to protect the shoulders and biceps from the sun.

Carrying capacity

Try suits have several pockets for carrying your provisions, a bicycle pump and any accessories that you need on the day the race.

The one-piece tri suit is the model that is most often used on short distances (XS, S, M). It has a front and back zip opening for ventilation during the race and pockets in the back for carrying provisions.

The two-piece tri suit model is generally used over long distances because it is more convenient during the technical breaks in particular. The top has pockets at the back and the tight shorts have a pad for maximum comfort in order to cope with the long hours spent on the bicycle.

Tip: Feel free to test the tri suit before the race during a training session in order to get used to wearing it and assess how comfortable it is.

It is advisable to wash the tri suit at a low temperature, i.e. no more than 30°C in a machine, and hang it in a place away from direct sunlight. Do not tumble dry, do not dry clean and do not iron in order to preserve the properties of your tri suit as much as possible. By following these precautions, it will last longer.

As you can see, the tri suit is the piece of equipment that will make your life simpler during a triathlon. It is the outfit that will help you to make the most of your race under the best possible conditions. Enjoy your triathlon!
