My first triathlon : Taitung, county of taiwain

My name is Cory KU and I am from Decathlon Taiwan Neihu store. I've been in Decathlon for 4.5 years and started as department manager then store manager now. My favorite sports are Basketball, Running, and Triathlon.

I have completed 13 triathlon race so far (7 Sprint, 4 Olympic, and 2 Half Ironman).

I would like to share my experience in my first Half Ironman which was the 2015 Challenge Taiwan in the beautiful Taitung county of Taiwan.

It took me 8 hours to complete the entire race and it also was my first ever 90km distance biking.

It all started from the desire to challenge myself and see if I can complete the 113km distance.

After I registered the race, I started to practice freestyle swimming with a colleague who is a very good swimmer. Changed transportation from scooter to bicycle and rode 12km to work each day. Running has always been my strongest discipline out of the 3 therefore I did not spend too much time but just enough to keep myself in shape

The race day

I was very nervous as I do not know how my body would react as it would be the first time I do sports for 8 hours non-stop but excited at the same time to be able to compete with many other triathlete on a beautiful landscape.

Taitung Flowing Lake is a 2km long man-made lake which the water is very still and safe from jellyfish or any other surprises which may happen in the sea. It took me 50 mins to complete the 1.9km swim while holding on the latest Geonaute G-eye sports camera on my hand. I took my time in T1 to wash off the lake water and get myself ready with sport drink and gel for the longest bike ride I had ever done.

As I enter the bike route, I was going quite fast thanks to the tail wind. However, I began to slow down gradually after 50km due to muscle fatique on the quads. I kept telling myself that I could slow down but can not stop pedaling. It got worse when coming back against the wind and that is when my pace slowed down to less than 20km/hr. After a grueling 4.5 hours ride, I finally made it back to T2 and ready for my favorite part of the race, running. It was right at noon where the sun is high and strong. Although I managed to pass some participants with consistent strides but would always make sure I kept hydrating myself in each water station.

At last, I successfully completed the race before closing time and was proud to tell myself that I DID IT.

Next step

This experience helped me to gain more confidence in myself that I know I can accomplish anything if I put in the necessary time and effort. I will be doing my 3rd Half Ironman next April and My goal is to complete a 226 Ironman distance before 2020.

FYI, Triathlon sport is very popular in Taiwan as well as we have 25 races this year and over 25,000 Triathlete practicing regularly.
