TIPS FOR A RISK-FREE TAN

How can I choose the right Sun Protection Factor (SPF)? Check out our advices!

1/ Depending on your skin type

Some people are more sensitive to UV rays than others. Each skin colour (phototype) reacts differently to the sun: this is natural photoprotection. There are 6 skin phototypes, categorised according to the colour of your skin. The whiter your skin, the less able it is to protect itself from the sun naturally.

N.B.: children are particularly sensitive to the sun, whatever their skin colour. You need to take particular care with them until they reach the age of 15. Never expose babies directly to sunlight.

2/ Depending on your sport

Whatever your skin type, adequate sun protection depends on the intensity of the UV rays, the duration of exposure and the activity carried out. Be careful of direct, reflected or diffuse solar radiation (link to solar radiation sheet). Cloudy skies and reflected sunlight are still a danger!

What is the Sun Protection Factor?

The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) measure the level of protection offered by sun creams against UVB rays. This index is assessed according to standardised European tests. The level of protection depends on physical activities, bathing, sweat and friction and is considerably reduced if the quantity of product applied is insufficient. Sun protection products do not guarantee 100% protection.

Applying sun cream properly

1. It must be applied to all exposed parts of the body, with particular attention paid to the most exposed parts, such as the ears, nose, forehead and nape of the neck.

2. Do not forget hidden and sensitive areas: hands, soles, nape, back of the knees, back of the arms etc.

3. A thick layer should be applied every 2 hours, especially after a swim, drying yourself or physical activity.

4. Even if your sun cream is water resistant, you should reapply after every swim.

For easy application, sun creams are available in various handy containers: roll-ons, sprays, creams or sticks - you choose depending on your environment!

N.B.: The level of protection drops considerably if an insufficient quantity is applied.

Body care tip: don't forget the after-sun lotion!

After exposure, your skin needs to be rehydrated. After-sun will help nourish your skin and is also a way of ensuring your tan lasts. In fact, healthy and hydrated skin is the key to a long-lasting tan. What is more, these cooling lotions can reduce the feeling of heat generated by exposure to the sun.
